One billion dollars to upgrade the Bruce Highway is a most significant announcement today by LNP leader, Campbell Newman, LNP Candidate for Mulgrave, Robyn Quick said today.
“This puts flesh on the bones of our 10 Year Bruce Highway Crisis Action Plan policy which was released some months ago.
S”afety and flood immunity will be the priorities. This funding is conditional on the Federal Government urgently bringing forward funds to fix this vital link for Queensland, and particularly in the Far North,” Mrs Quick said.
“Along with many others in the local community, I have been demanding action for the last years from the Bligh Labor Government to address this very serious issue of the Bruce Highway and all we get in response is another twenty year plan when Labor has already had twenty years to fix it. That’s forty years ! It just will not happen under Labor who have squandered the taxes of Queenslanders in the most shameful way,” Mrs Quick said.
“The federal opposition leader, Tony Abbot, has recognised that for support for the Bruce Highway is needed, so it is now up to the Gillard ALP government to come to the table and bring forward the funds. Far North Queenslanders have waited too long for this dangerous highway to be fixed. Many deaths could have been avoided with more urgent action, with the RACQ predicting that 350 people will die in the next ten years without such action,” Mrs Quick said.
“The Federal Government is responsible for funding national highways and has been let off the hook by this present incompetent Labor government. We recognise an LNP Queensland government is going to have to get the ball rolling and will put up one billion dollars over the next ten years,” Mrs Quick said. “This will support some 6,200 jobs for Queensland families.”
“It’s time for a change of government to get this fixed,” Mrs Quick said.
