LNP blueprint to boost dwindling home ownership rates

Shadow Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Home Ownership David Janetzki has continued his state-wide blitz listening to Queenslanders about the housing crisis, as statistics reveal home ownership rates across the Gold Coast are lagging other states.

After a nearly a decade of housing neglect under the Palaszczuk Labor Government, the LNP has announced its plan to get more Gold Coast residents into their own home.

The latest Census data has revealed the home ownership rate in the electorates of Bonney, Coomera, Mermaid Beach, Southport and Surfers Paradise are below the Queensland average of 63.5%.

Mr Janetzki said Queensland is last on the national home ownership ladder and the Gold Coast isn’t immune to the challenges faced by first home buyers.

“The Great Australian Dream is becoming a nightmare on the Gold Coast,” Mr Janetzki said.

“Only the LNP has the Right Priorities for Queensland’s Future, including securing our housing foundations.

“Our priority is helping Queenslanders realise their dream of owning their own home.

“We are considering all options to help Queenslanders into home ownership including tax relief, incentives and land supply with the necessary infrastructure to accommodate a growing population.

“We will prioritise building an incentive framework to support home ownership, examining areas including first home-owner grants and shared responsibility schemes.

“For years Labor has failed to deliver the housing supply needed for our growing population.

“The warning bells have been sounding for years, but Labor has been too consumed by its own chaos and crisis to heed them.”

LNP Member for Bonney Sam O Connor said Labor had the wrong priorities for Queensland’s Future.

“Our community is ground zero for the home ownership crisis,” Mr O’Connor said.

“While it might not be everyone’s dream to own a home, everyone who aspires to become a homeowner should have the choice and an LNP government will make it more achievable.

“Under Labor, it has become increasingly difficult for the next generation.

“The LNP is committed to reversing that trend and giving young people the chance to get into their own home.”
